Never have been one to make or establish "New Year Resolutions" and will not intend to change. The new year is however, is good time to reflect on how much God has blessed and to recommit to goals that have been set forth over the previous year.
Recommitment or even revival is always needed when long term goals are set so burn out and failure are less likely to be present. Revisit goals once per month to monitor progress is needed at the very least.
Resolutions to lose weight are always the most popular. Most whom establish the resolution to do so typically only last a month or so and abolish the commitments. The number one reason for the eradication of the commitments is that goals are set at to lofty of standards and thus the person gets discouraged and burns out. When making goals make sure that goals are attainable and properly awarded. For example, and overall goal could be to lose 35 pounds, but always keep in mind to set intermediate goals of 3-5 pounds per month. These intermediate steps are the driving force that will keep one sustained for long periods throughout the commitment.
Our bodies respond in many different ways and it responds well to positive feedback. When one of the intermediate goals are attained then a reward system needs to be in place. For example, a goal is set to run 5 miles within the first month then a reward maybe a new pair of running shoes. Granted it may be quite expensive to do this once per month but be creative and money not always needed to be spent. On the contrary, if your goal wasn't attained and instead weight was gained or you didn't reach an intermediate goal, negative feedback is never needed. This will result in major setbacks and burnout. Instead, monitor what happened throughout the month and notice changes in diet or changes in training habits have occurred. Failure can be very handy in learning about yourself and should be used to become proactive to accomplish goals.
